My girlfriend lives on Mindinao in Philippines. What cell phone service can I get for us with me being in US? I need something reliable but cost effective. Seems like calling cards are a pain and usually are not reliable at least in my case. ty

Cellular plans will cost you arm and a leg. Especially from USA using a cell phone to call a cell phone in Philippines is a big NO NO! Cellular providers charge so much for the international calls.

Your best bet is to find reliable calling cards and use them.

Calling cards are a pain yes. but CTA's Gold Oro cards are great for calling cell phones in the PI, and Hello Asia are best with landline.

Here is the trick I used however. I got a Voice Over IP (VOIP) from Lingo.com, brought the box to the Philippines and hooked it up with PDLT DSL service. She had a USA number in the Philippines so she can call me where ever I was at. I still kept a few phone cards in case of course for when she was out and about. All in all it costed me about $70 a month for unlimited access($20 for Lingo, $50 for the DSL), and she got DSL service on top of everything. It saved us sooooo much money doing it this way, and you know what, PDLT doesn't care what you hook up to the lines, as long as you are paying. You can also use Vonage in the same manner.

Getting an international roaming service with phone from Philippines is a pretty good idea for receiving text messages from your GF. You can send text msg through your cellphone. If you use t-mobile service, its 15 cents for sending a msg. then tell her to text you back in your roaming phone because receiving text msgs through phones here in the US has 5-20 cent charge. ok first off, i just couldn't help myself. that answer up there about proving if she loves you first is below the belt and out of the topic.there are many DECENT intelligent, beautiful filipinas who have a good heart..i see where the stereotype comes from but there are also nice filipino men here who filipinas would want rather than foreigners of a totally different culture. probably only the really desperate or the ones really in love want the GI Joes. so there.

Anyway, sorry I went off tangent..for your question, my friend and I use SMART. its pretty reliable. we text each other constantly and I think its only 1 peso/msg (have to check this again though).. The advice above about using yahoo pc to pc is good too (for phone calls). Ive tried it and its great if you always have internet connection anyway...and you can also use chikka but its more expensive if its cell phone to PC (2.50pesos/text in the Philippines).

well i have been there still am umm she sends me super sim3 smart buddy prepaid but you have to get your phone unlocked if you are in the U.S or keep you current phone and unlock an old phone and still it is best for text i got so pissed off with this stuff i just text on my cell like i did before i am sure you know its about 5 bucks for 2 minutes, my fiancee is in mindao region too davao digos city where
