Hi!
A friend lent me a doppler, but I don't know after how many weeks of pregnancy the heartbeat can be heard with one of these.
I know I'll have a dating scan in a few weeks and I'll be able to hear it then, but then I have to wait nearly 6 weeks to know if there IS a heartbeat at all.
Does anyone know when these dopplers can pick up the baby's heartbeat?

I am talking of a proper doppler, teh medical type, not one of the baby listeners with headphones by the way.

Maybe I need to mention this is my second baby, I can recognise a heart beating at 150, that wouldn't be mine :)

How far along are you?
I am 12 weeks today and I just got my fetal doppler in on Friday, and I heard the heartbeat. :D
It depends on a lot of factors. What MHz is the probe? Where are you aiming it? Do you have a thick layer of "padding" on your belly?
I have a 3 MHz probe, When I hear the heartbeat I place the doppler just above my pubic bone and then I aim it low--toward my uterus. I have little extra padding on my belly and it wasn't a problem for me to hear the HB, but if you're obese it may be harder for you to hear it. My sister-in-law is about 260 lbs and she couldn't hear it for several weeks, and had to see the heartbeat via ultrasound at 12 weeks as opposed to using a doppler in the doctor's office.

Usually at 12 weeks with proper equipment and technique. If you don't know what you're listening for you could confuse it with your own heartbeat. I had a doppler at 11 weeks and didn't pick up, my u/s showed all was ok. I had my 1st ultrasound at 6 weeks and we could already see the heart beating away. When you go in for your scan, ask the sonographer to show you the heart and if it's beating.

Any where from 10-14 weeks you can start hearing it. But like someone said the doctors adive against it because it can be hard to find sometimes and you may start to freak out if you can't find it. I've had a few patients come to the hospital becuase they think that the baby has no heart beat anymore.

I have four kids and I heard all of them but one at my 8 week appointment with the fetal doppler in the Dr's office. It depends on the size of the Mother, position of the baby and how far along you are. If you can't hear it, they will just check it at your next appointment. 10 weeks is right in the middle. You might, you might not.

I've not tried one personally but they are advertised for being able to hear baby's heartbeat from approx 13 weeks.
I was going to buy one but the doctor warned me off saying that it's sometimes really hard to find the heartbeat and makes you panic when it can't be found.

Hi the home ones are from 14 weeks, but you have to know what you are listening for.

my mom had one, but she returned it, it was a waste of money, it dosnt work at all.... but we did it at about 7 months so it was kind of a rip off
