i thought i'd enjoy the winter Holiday more, if it meant something. And of course we know that christmas doesn't mean anything-- it was just made up, for political and commercial reasons. Does anyone out there still observe Saturnalia? I think it's to honor the god of agriculture?... which, naturally, you do by over eating and drinking lots of wine? sounds like fun to me :)

If people start celebrating Saturnalia, it would eventually be just as commercial

Enjoy what you like. The USA is a free country if you are lucky enough to live here.

Christmas means what you make of it. The Christmas tradition is not all political and commercial. The Christmas tradition is heavily from the birth of a baby who as a man shaped history more than any other.

I do not intend to take away from what you want to enjoy during the Winter season. If you want to celebrate the Roman winter solstice festival, Saturnalia, the USA is a free country. But I offer that you consider the claims of the baby whose life many remember at Christmas. To us, Christmas is not an obsolete holiday lie Saturnalia. There is eternal life through the baby of Christmas. There's an open invitation for you to find out about Him and live.

I celebrate Yule. There is something about realising you are at the shortest day (and longest night) and a hope about the days getting longer and warmer. I turn off all the lights and try to picture our ancestors on a cold dark night, without all our artificial light and heat. We try to keep warm and entertained the old fashioned way, for just a few hours. We also try to keep all gifts practical, homemade and only for our closest friends.

Christmas does mean something. It was the birth of Jesus Christ. If you dont want to celebrate it the way most people celebrate it (presents, cookies etc) then celebrate it the religous way. Its a good way to meet new people and it can still be fun.
There is also winter sports and activites that you can become involved in.
As for Satunalia Im sorry I dont know anything about it.

Well we have Carnaval in February. We put a disguise and just go out to the street and pubs to have fun. I like Christmas cos I don't have to go work on Christmas Day and New Year's Eve.
