if you can help tourists become "one" with the island coastland that would put you at a big advantage over places like maui where they just give em a swimming pool and a stretch of beach and say cya!...I know a guy where I work and he runs a little tour down in puerto rico and he says people are spending large amounts of cash just to have what he has...which I think is a sense of belonging down there in the tropics...i have been fortunate to have relatives who were water enthusiasts/fishers etc down in the sub tropics and we went to the tropics and I got a real sense of belonging there...people would pay dearly to feel that...not just feel like another tourist getting taken for thousands...

The Philippines can be an equal or even exceed tourism in Thailand if a few things were done. First the government or tourist authority must spend some money and promote the tourism already in place and tell the world the advantages of travel to the Philippines. I have never ever seen one poster of the Philippines in any travel agency here in Canada. Secondly, the lower priced hotels, motels and accommodations must do more to make a persons stay more comfortable. The 5 star hotels are great, but the $20-$30 hotels are really in need of some attention, for the most part. Just even coat hangers!!!

I have been to Europe twice, Asia 5 times, including Japan, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore, and Hong Kong, but my times in the Philippines have been some of the best. People, mostly men, love the Filipino people, and of course mostly the women, but the food leaves something to be desired and service in restaurants is slow and not on par with what Westerns expect. Meals in the Philippines are often served at different times to people sitting at the same table. Tourists don't like that! Otherwise, very hospitable people and most people speak English.

Some ways to bring in the tourists would be:

the Government to subsidise the cost of airline tickets on PAL. That will equate to more tourists spending more $'s.

Get PAL to increase the luggage allowance for tourist departures. That will see tourists spending more on goods to take back home (there are some very good bargains available).

Spruce Manila up. Look at Baywalk, well lit and reasonably clean.
Start combating the pollution and litter especially in the rivers and along the streets.

Advertise the benefits that the provinces have to offer.

Get rid of the mentality that all foreigners are "JOES" and that they are all rich and therefore ripe for ripping off.

good points on tourism: 1. tourism creates lots of jobs, with higher incomes, 2. tourism is eco-friendly, tourists want to visit pristine beaches, forests, parks, etc. not overcrowed urban slums 3. tourism by-products include better recreation facilities, etc. the theaters, stadiums, etc that attract tourists, and are paid for by tourists, are also enjoyed by locals 4. tourism creates bigger tax base, more government services, tourists pay sale taxes, hotel taxes, transport taxes, etc. but make very little demands on police, fire, hospital and other social services funded by these taxes. 5. tourism promotes traditional arts, crafts, dance, culture, etc.. tourist areas like Hawaii and Tahiti have the strongest traditions in native culture, due in large part to vibrant tourism industry that pays actors to learn and maintain these traditonal skills. bad things about tourism in the philippines: 1. very few tourist areas are free from pollution, poverty, filth, overcrowding that tourists do not want to see. 2. it takes far to long to get to most tourist destinations, transportation is substandard, tourists want to be poolside at a beach resort within 2 hours of arrival at the airport, currently it could take days to get to a nice resort other than Boracay. 3. most hotels are substandard, overpriced. 4. most areas lack western quality and cleanliness standards, with the exception of maybe some Boracay & Angeles city resorts. 5. few well organized tours or cruises available for the busy western tourist that wants to see the philippines in 1 week. most tourists are dissapointed that they may only visit 1 or 2 spots on a week long vacation to the philippines, unlike tours of europe that may visit several different cities and countries on a 1 week tour.

Advertise advertise advertise!!! More window signs, more bumper stickers and more support for travel agencies dealing with the Philippines here in the USA. There isnt enough word of mouth here in the USA. Open back up for US military bases such as Subic Bay and Clark Air Force Base to get the servicemen spending money in town and thier family members visiting them while on tour in the Philippines.

Mayor Atienza had been starting it! Are you in the Philippines?
He had turned Manila into a nice place! He had developed the baywalk which is now the attraction among foreigners and local residents at night! Many had jobs because of the restaurants there. Had you seen how the streets of Manila are? It is well lighted at night. It is only here in the Philippines!
The pathway along the University belt have nice pavement!
Had you seen the development he had done with Dangwa which is where the beautiful flowers not only from Baguio but from all over the world comes? Even the lights are shaped into flowers! Lawton had been well lighted & the fountains came into life again. There are wooden benches where people can sit.
To Filipino residents & foreigners here, dont you know that there one of the best tourist attractions here in the Philippines! Department stores here like the SM Department stores & the Mall of Asia.
Did you know that the MOA ( Mall of Asia ) is even bigger than MOA ( Mall of MInnesotta) which is the biggest mall in the USA? Didnt you know that 168 in Divisoria is already a word of mouth to all balikbayan friends not only from California but also London!
I know Europeans and Americans who opted to live in the Philippines for more than 6 months per year because they love the sun and the beaches over there.
Isnt is that foreigners from all over the world love going to Boracay & Palawan? They even know more of the tourist spots here in the Philippines than some residents.
Some hotels are even better than those in other Asian countries, they are already at parr globally!
Where in the world will you find kare kare with bagoong, manggang hilaw with bagoong, lechon, halo-halo ? Definitely they originiated from the Philippines. Did you know that the chef in the White House is a Filipina? Even President Busch is gaining weight because of the recipes being prepared by her...
We have the best schools here where Americans , Asians like the Thailanders go to! Filipina nurses are all over the world from London to USA , Ireland, Middle East, Singapore! Who could offer them the care that only Filipino nurses can render?
Mind you , it isnt only nurses which is in demand in the USA but also filipino pharmacists! They are already in the USA, Canada & Australia.
Philippine education is definitely at parr with the world!

our dept of tourism secretary joseph durano, is doing his best to promote the philippines from other asian countries as well, he made a tv commercial for airing in cable providers, he has done tourism expos in europe and korea. a korean star is the commercial model, to attract more koreans to visit here. i also noticed that more koreans are studying here coz the medium of instruction is english, which they want to learn. some are living in the cities and some are in the provinces.

For Patrick 4t
you go on and on about things which most tourists are not interested in. We don't care about shopping malls and nurses and Manila, we want service and quality for the price we pay.
Your English is also appalling, grammar and verb tense use dreadful, so don't talk about education and the English language, write in Tagalog if you can't do it properly in English.

Prices in this country for resorts and hotels are way above the price you would pay in Thailand and Malysia. A five star resort in Thailand costs around 100usd a night , similar to here, but the standards of service and quality of finishes in the construction of the resorts is better than here.
The comprehension of waitresses and other front of hotel staff here leaves a lot to be desired in the better places, it's common to ask the same question three times before it's understood.
Basically, I believe this country should be back on the top of the Asian destination list, as it used to be 50 years ago.
What happened?
The working day here is also not efficient, I know of a top resort where the staff receive 6 meals a day, five of which are during their 8 hour work day, that means they spend a lot of the day walking back and forth to the staff canteen, how much work gets done.
The other serious problem in this country is the ridiculous use of mobile phones. Stop people in the hospitality business from using phones at their work stations and pretty soon more care and attention will go towards the guest instead of him having to wait patiently for a barman to stop texting before he is able to order a drink

I sort of like it here without millions of tourists, and I don't see it changing for a long time, this country has dropped way behind its' neighbours in tourism numbers. Even Vietnam overtook it in 1996, only 4 years after it opened its' doors to foreign guests!
Malaysia has received 76 million tourists so far this year, we're lucky to get one million genuine tourists a year.
We also don't like being called 'aliens', we're from the planet Earth!!!
Call us foreigners or guests, which is what we are in this country, and treat us as guests unless we do wrong.
We're fed up with being ripped off in beautiful third world countries, and many more tourists would come if proof is shown that we are welcome and will be helped during our stay, instead of being constantly pressured to buy t-shirts, shorts, take boat trips, do this, do that.
In this regard, your most famous tourist destination is the worst example. Boracay has become a nightmare of noise, hassles, rubbish and algae covered water, locals may enjoy it, but discerning foreigners are looking for more peaceful, eco friendly resorts these days, so maybe people in the tourist business should concentrate more on preserving the natural beauty of the islands instead of smothering them with revoltingly coloured concrete block houses and allowing unscrupulous outsiders to come in and get permits to rip off tourists with rubbish.

It's not always about money........... It's generally about being relaxed when on holiday!

By promoting the country and it's people. Marketing the country as a whole not just a certain island would do good for the country.
