Unless you really love travelling in winter, you definitely want to come in summertime. Some of the roads to the more scenic areas are closed in winter -- including the road to the incredibly picturesque Morraine Lake, near Lake Louise.

If you don't mind sharing the road with hundreds of tourist buses, come in July or early August. Otherwise, come in early June, late August or September.

Definently go in March/April so you can go skiing (Lake Louise, Sunshine and Norquay are my favorites), its usually pretty warm at that time so you can ski in shorts and a T-shirt. Banff is a great party town too so you'll have fun. Best skiing in the world.

Begining of the summer season - end of May or the end of the summer season - end of Sept. The weather is still nice but most of the summer tourists aren't there and the traffic isn't quite as crazy. If you're a skier that's a different story you may want to do it just when the weather starts warming up but the hills are still in good condition - end of March.

In winter there is all kinds of skiing. You can also go horseback riding and hiking. In summer there's canoeing, fishing, hiking, golf, whitewater rafting. It's always beautiful and there's always something to do.
