We have all done bad things and anyone who says they havn't, I dont believe them. Never too late to make amends. Dont dwell too much on the past and put every effort into the future. Analyze what you view to be a bad thing and try from this day forward to do the opposite when faced with the oppurtunity to repeat the bad thing.
Oh, and 55, life is just beginning, plenty of time to do some good things.

I would suggest either of two approaches. One, move on with your life, and do the cliche good things, like volunteer, donate money, teach, etc. Or two, think about what sort of supposed misdeeds you have done in the past, and either make it your plan to correct the wrongs you caused (if possible) or do something to help out other people who do what you used to do. For example if you had issues with drug abuse, but you think the damage you caused to family relationships is beyond repair, then you could work as a drug counselor to help out others who are in the situation you used to be in. Honestly, I think that even in asking this question, you are already a better person.

After you learn to forgive yourself, its really quite easy, then forgive others. This is the one and only trip you or I are ever gonna have on this planet, so make it a fun ride, enjoy the moments that are real, now. Past can never be changed, so why even think about it. Future is Unwritten, so no need to worry. You and I are alive at this moment only, and even that is uncertain. I stopped trying to figure junk out years ago and decided to live. I had to make friends with myself before I could be any good to anyone else. I changed, I made a new friend, me, then kept rolling along, and never looked back.

In Scientology there are many workable ways in dealing with this. One of them is through a process known as writing up your "overts and withholds." You will be able to confront your past and regain your personal self-respect and become more of an honest man.

It is never too late. The best and easiest way is to think of the golden rule. Treat others like you would like to be treated. The rest will fall into place.

Are you for real? Well, anyway, its never to late to change. YOu have to have the will power to change.
I would suggest every morning, you should greet every person you encounter by smiling and saying, "good morning", Open the door for someone, etc.............
