They say "from violence comes violence", but where does that even come from? Does that somehow mean if one side stops fighting the other side would as well? If an entire group just refused to fight, would the parties fighting that group cease?

For example, does that mean nobody would ever attack the Amish?

If 2 groups are fighting and 1 stops fighting that means that 1 is gonna get thier asses kicked. Sometimes you gotta make some heads roll.

I personally like "an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind" my self. It just depends on the aggressor. If it were, say Hitler, I'd say the group refusing to fight would pretty cease to exist. If you want some insight into peaceful people, just read anything about Tibetans, or books by Dalai Llamas, their stories will make you cry sometimes..

I'm sure you heard about the Amish community in Pennsylvania, where a crazed truck driver took Amish school children hostage, eventually killing 5 girls(I think it was 5.) Violence reaches everywhere.

Someone recently did attack the Amish - unarmed school girls no less. There is a time when violence is justified, and that is when violence is being done to the innocent. I would have shot that guy in a heartbeat if I saw he was murdering little girls. Deadly force is also justified in defending yourself against a life-threatening situation. If someone is trying to kill you and the only way to stop them is to kill them before they kill you, then the violence is justified. I won't get into war.

You need to watch the film, BILLY JACK starring Tom Laughlin for this answer. It explores the two sides of the issue, pacifism and violence, along with racial topics. A great film. Billy Jack believes violence is the way to solve problems, his girlfriend Jean does not. Watch the film.

I do not pick fights now or in my past. Aggressive and angry people would not stop fighting the Amish just because they chose not to fight. People like you and me think logically and people who think they must fight to somehow prove themselves do not think logically or they would not fight. However, even I draw the line when it comes to protecting my wife, children and grandchildren. In that case I would do without question what I would have to do to protect them from harms way.

No they'd just kick the sh*t out of them. The problem with people is that somebody has to win and somebody has to give up and when one side gives up the other side gets to take over or take whatever they want. If you don't want to lose everything, you have to stay and fight for it. It sucks, but that's the way it is.

if you want peace prepare for war. no matter how nice you are there will always be one greed to attack another. Columbus for example took food and furs from the native americans, and then slaughtered them in search of gold and spices. i guess thats where the whole nice guys finish last thing comes in. the guys got his own national holiday. not to mention he did not discover that the world is round but thats another issue.

Non-violence comes from the inner power. See, tolerence does not reflect timidity, yet unnecessary reteliation breeds hatred and contempt. So its better to keep silence as long as it is necessary for mankind.
