I mean one that goes into detail of ancient Roman, Greek, Norse, Egyptian, etc. Even a series of books would be helpful. Or even one that goes into less detail, but compares the similar gods of different cultures.

Bulfinch's Mythology has always been the cornerstone for mythology researching. Go there first for an overview, then hit the more specific books for the details.

Time Life Books came out with a series on Mythology several years ago that was excellent, but I can't remember the name of it.

Joseph Cambell's Hero With a Thousand Faces is a good start. He also has a series of works on the story of Myth through the ages.
