The side opposite the scorer's booth so it can be seen by those keeping the stats.

The down markers are located on both sides of the field in the NFL. To measure if a first down has occured, they will use the down marker located on the opposite side of the field. Example: A running back rushes to a possible first down on the left side of the field, so the down marker on the right side would be used.
