The partition is set to active so your computer can boot up from that drive. Your system files must be located on the active partition (Usually C:)

The active flag is located in the MBR (Master Boot Record) at the beginning of the disk. When your computer boots-up it checks the MBR to see which partiton on the drive is active, then boots to that partition.

You should do it to make the drive bootable. :)
