If I don't have to fly, I much prefer train travel. It is just more sociable. If one is very English and doesn't want to interact with ones fellow travellers, just choose a twin-seat and the most you have to put up with is a stranger sitting next to you. Its the same as a bus. But on a train one can choose to sit in a four-seat area. With the same on the other side that gives the potential of up to seven other passengers to interact with, as well as more space if if the train is not busy.
Trains tend to be more quiet, and the motion involved makes reading easier than on a bus.

But if you are after the cheapest, then its probably the bus, especially in the UK and Ireland.

I use trains unless it is unavoidable to go by bus. I just can't do overnight bus journeys. They turn me into the devil. So uncomfortable, either freezing or boiling. Just awful. Trains are a bit more expensive but i really don't care. I don't use passes because I often travel in extreme Eastern Europe (Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia etc) and it doesn't cover those.
