Only diamond will cut glass is one of the biggest myths out there.
Glass will cut glass... Don't believe them.
Only a certified gemologist can tell the difference. You can do it too, but it takes some training.

You could always drop it in water. Diamonds refract the same amount of light as water does. So dropping a diamond into a glass of water should make it almost invisible. You should still see something because of the impurities inside the diamond. But, not much. Of course, who is going to carry water with them while shoping for diamonds.

The simple " four Cs" of diamonds — cut, color, clarity, and carat.
Cut: The cut of a diamond has the most effect on its sparkle, or brilliance. Even if the diamond has perfect color and clarity, a poor cut can make a diamond look dull.
Color: Diamonds with very little color are the most highly valued and are priced accordingly. A little color can diminish a diamond's brilliance.
Clarity: Diamonds with few flaws, or inclusions, are very rare and highly valued. Clarity is graded based on the number, location, size, and type of the inclusions found in a diamond.
Carat (weight): The weight of a diamond is measured in carats. Since larger diamonds are more rare than smaller diamonds, diamond value tends to rise exponentially with carat weight.
...But really, only professionals are very accurate with this stuff.

They will cut glass. They have a sparkle and shine to them and with a jewel loop you will be able to see inclusions where fake ones will be inclusion free. To find a diamond that has no flaws is very expensive.
