If you rename the SRT file to have the same name as the accompanying video file (like an AVI file), then most players will read it automatically and give you the option to show subtitles. You should have both files in the same folder too.

moviename.SRT
moviename.AVI

in vlc player there is an option for choosing subtitle whereas in mplayer you only need to rename as moviename.srt
