I'm the mother of identical twins and here these questions alot. Here are some FACTS:
1. Identical twins are from one fertilized egg that splits. It's a random act of nature and not impacted by family history, age, ethnicity, or fertility drugs. ALL pregnancies have a 1 in 250 chance of being identical twins.
2. Fraternal twins occur when the female produces two eggs and both are fertilized. There is research the indicates there is a hyper-ovulation gene that can be passed down. Only the female's family history is relevant because the male cannot make the female produce two eggs. A male with a family history of twins does not impact the chances of having twins himself but does increase the chances of having a daughter who has twins. Also, the family history is only relevant if the twins in the family are fraternal since identical twins are just a random occurance.
3. Fraternal twins are also more common in African Americans (less common in asians and hispanics). You have a higher chance of fraternal twins the older you get (women over 45 have a 17% chance). Also, the more pregnancies you have the more likely you are to have twins. And if the female is on fertility drugs then she is more likely to have fraternal twins.
So, really, everyone has a chance of identical twins and if your grandmother is a fraternal twin then there is an increased chance that you will have fraternal twins. If you become pregnant you might want to mention this to your doctor so an early ultrasound can be done to determine if it's twins.
Hope this helps!

they used to say that it skipped a generation..
In our family we have 17 sets. Some are Identical and some are not some are boys some are girls and some are one of each. Its is every generation for 3 now and it has happened to both sexes in our family. It is true that is does run in some families more than others. My one cousin has 2 sets. (all girls)
I have 3 singles and wanted one more baby but my husband said NO it will be a family of 5 not 4 he figured our luck may come to and end. Twins are wonderful when they belong to someone else. But they are so much work...

Yes. The overall chance of having twins is about 1 in 100. Whereas if you or one of your parents is a twin the chances are nearer 1 in 60

Yes there is a slightly higher probability that you may give birth to twins. It is a genetic tendency. When you do get pregnant, seek out a good OBGYN as it may be an at risk pregnancy.
How exciting though!!

Twins are completely Genetic! The closer twins are in your family tree the more likely you are to have them. Especially if both partners have twins run in their family.

Yup, they run very heavily in my family. I haven't had a set yet though.... Darn! Every generation in my family... has a set of twins, and its always been the oldest girl in that generation... which would be me. Weird huh?

yes there is a possibility you can have twins...it skips a generation and is determined by the mothers side....
there are those freak occurances though that you could release 2 eggs....and if you are on fertility drugs...then they say you should always at least expect twins

It is genetic, and -- as many genes -- it may skip generations. So, yes, you may have a fairly good chance!
