I think a lot of people don't realize that servers only make $2.13 an hour (plus tips), and also don't realize that they have to tip out the busboys/bartender/expo/hostess/etc, and so they think they're being generous if they leave more than 10%.
I waited tables in college, and know how hard it is, and I routinely tip 20-25%, depending on several factors. If I go out to eat alone, I typically tip 25% because 2-4 people could have occupied my table and had a higher bill, for example.

There is really no set standard percentage to tip. A tip is a gratuity
(A voluntary reward to another in exchange for a service, such as a tip.) The tip is based entirely on service. If I get horrible service somewhere I have a word with the manager/owner and explain why I am leaving no tip. If I get okay service then I tip 10-15%. If I get excellent service I tip 20%.

I am a server/bartender. Don't ever judge a book by it's cover..wow! learned that one fast. People are funny, you just give as best you can & if the tip isn't great, then the next one will make up for it. Most people do not know how to tip, because they don't work in the business. The majority have a 9-5 and count on that check every week, like I did, unlike "us". Don't get stressed out, though, it's not worth the aggravation. I've been doing this for quite a while after being in the office for quite awhile. (so I guess I can say these things) Take care & take a day off, it's worth the price!

I tip usually 20 percent if the waitress or waiter had excellent service. 15 percent if it was average and 10 percent if poor service. Sometimes more then 20 percent. If excellent service. Now my sister tips like 50 percent because she was a waitress and she know that they live off there tips

I will tell you how I tip
1. If the service is great, I tip the 20 % and then a little extra.
2. If the service is ok, I tip the 20 %
3. If the srevice is bad, well I don't tip as much, maybe 10 %
I know this doesn't sound good for the bad service but if the wait person just doesn't care or doesn't know their job maybe they need retrained.

If I go to a restaurant in a strange town that I will probably never go back too and the waitstaff was excellent then I would tip 15%. If it is in my own home town that I visit often then I tend to tip very well if the service is what it should be. Thanks for being an excellent waiter.

I start at 20% for at least average service, and go up from there, it's easier to figure! If service was great, then I round up accordingly. I also don't expect much, so going above and beyond can be as simple as asking to refill my drink before I quite finish it!
If I get really bad service, I leave considerably less, usually under 10%. No tip can just mean I forgot, so i try to make a statement.

I tip based on the service. If I get what I deem to be excellent service I'll tip very well. If I feel the service was very lacking I'll tip towards the lower end of the "standard" or less even.
Though I think some people either don't care or don't know.

Mu husband, before he died, used to leave $1,00 no matter what.. It drove me nutz! So I always tip a minimum of 20% unless the service REALLY sucks. If I have to ask the staff to bring me a drink refill or if I ask for something and never get it I might tip ony 15%. If I get excellent service, I adjust the tip up accordingly.
