i've heard and found it true in many cases that long distance relationships never work but is the same true for friendships?

It depends on the relationship. In my experience, if they are really good friends (aka they're one of the top 5 important people in your life) then it can pretty easily be maintained. The world is "getting smaller" all of the time and it's unbelieveably easy to keep in contact. If they're not that close... it's not all that likely. You'll probably stay friendly and might be able to revive the friendship easily when you return, but it's hard to keep in contact when they aren't a priority in your life.
And yes, I am speaking from experience. One of my closest friends moved to the other side of the world about 6 years ago, another lives on the other side of the country (as of about 3 years ago), and I moved away from the rest at the beginning of this year! I'm as close to the people that really matter as I ever was. The people that were wonderful, but less close, have faded except for occasional emails or phonecards, if that.

Of course they can, long distance friendships can be anything between them being a long way away or them just working really hard at work, what ever way if there just maintained then you guys will always be the same, and yes they can if its true friendship.

I think it is possible to maintain a long distance friendship and i know because i have several. The best way to maintain is to use the internet, stay in contact via msn, email, etc, or failing that stay in contact by phone. But you can maintain it if you work hard enough.

it is a real problem and let me explain. in a relationship u want someone who is emotionally there for u AND phisically there for you too. let say you are having a down day, you try to call and he's busy at work cuz the hrs are off, or eve if u r on the same time schedualle, you need to sit down and talk, and not over the phone, but he's not there. so u find just a pall to do that with but eventually youll fall for someone closer and more available.
the only major plus would be the reuniens, those r the best, but they have to come often enough to keep the both of u comitted and satisfied.
sorry, good luck

wether it is true friendship or true love, distance relationships do work out but they have some challenges.
Good communication is a key

I have a friend that I have been friends with for about 30 years. We have gone years without seeing or talking to each other, but we do contact each other, it is like we have never been apart. He is a very dear friend and we will always have a special friendship.
