Maybe your drive is some as hard disk mode. Slave or master. It need be different on one IDE cable. You also may check in BIOS and see if your CD shows up.

as above: the OS windows/linux whatever can only detect it if the bios has found it first. So by stopping the pc from booting up and browsing the menus in bios setup you can see if it's there.

Note, where did it connect on your friends computer? was it on the master connection lead (those big fat gray things) or on the secondary master.

All these drives can be switched on and off in bios...they can also dumbfound bios if the jumper on cdd is on the wrong pins...you can choose between master slave and cs/cable select.

Try these two things. First when u start the computer does it show it at start up, in the screens before windows starts when it detects your memory and harddrive and other hardware? You might be able to fix it before winodws loads if you press delete or F10 depending on your computer, plus might have to hold down button for a few seconds. Next you can go to control panel and in there system and there second tab in there device manager and see if it is there, if it is try deleting it and hopefully it will recongize it when you restart your system.
