I would look at it this way: a sale is like a completion of a contract. Selling is the act of trying to make a sale. For instance, say I sell potatos and that's my business. If I'm selling my potatos, then I'm making lots of sales and my business is doing well; otherwise, I must be a real "potatoe head"!
If this clears things up then I have sold you on the idea of selling.

Sale is a noun, sell is a verb

Sale(selling a product): "Tomorrow I will put hot dogs up for sale in my store."

Sale(to sell at a lower price): "Tomorrow I will put the hot dogs on sale in my store."

Notice in the first sentence, you would use "for sale", but in the second you would use "on sale".

Sell(to put something up for sale): "Tomorrow I will sell hot dogs in my store."
