I'm a female who's going to Japan on exchange next year. You're not really meant to flush tampons down the toilet but what do they do with them in Japan?

All public toilets in Japan have small bins- not like the sanatry bins here, just a small bin with a plastic bag in it. You wap it in either bags provided or in toilet tissue and put it in the bin. If you are staying with a host family you may like to ask the mother or your host sister what they do with sanatry items. They will be more than happy to answer your questions.

Also just a note. It's very hard to use a Japanese style toilet during period time so try and find western style where possbile- some public places in Japan still have Japanese style toilets.

In every toilet or WC everywhere around the modern world there
is a sign NOT to flush tampons or any other stuff down the toilet, you have a small bin where you can dispose of whatever you need. Some even provide small bags.
Good luck in Japan.

In most women's toilets there are those little bins. In some toilets they are only in certain cubicles, so it's best to check before you go in and shut the door. But often those little bins don't have lids - and kids go in those toilets too...! So I, personally, flush them. I've never blocked a toilet yet, and hope I never do..!

If you're worried about flushing them, you could probably buy some little disposal bags in Daiso - I wouldn't swear to it, because I've never looked, but even if there's nothing specially designed for the purpose they'll have something that could be used. Nappy sacks for example..! Stick it in the bag and bin it. More discreet! Japanese toilets never seem to have a fancy disposal bin, just a tiny little thing with a bag as a liner.
; )

In the home, I always flush them. You can't really do much else ...!

BTW, it's a bit strange using a Japanese style toilet for the first time...!

It seems that pads are more popular than tampons there, perhaps because of the potential risks with tampons, but one solution would be to find sanitary disposal boxes (and this should be available in most bathrooms in Japan). You can use these boxes to throw out anything used instead of flushing them.
Enjoy your time in Japan. :)
