I was just curious by the fact that the Hongkies like to be called by their English names. It definitely makes it easier for everyone, especially the English-speaking ones, to remember their names. But I feel this is just so Un-Chinese or whatever you might call it. I think they should just stick with whatever names given by their parents. Also, there's a growing trend of Hongkies who give themselves some silly names that do not even bear any meanings, ie: Pepsi,Fish. Please help me to understand the underlying factors behind what could be known as a voluntary "self-westernisation" of the Chinese that some Hongkies might not even realise the consequences of having done so. More pathetic, the Western-born Chinese have always been the ones that are heavily sought after in their entertainment industry. Arent the Hongkies should be proud of who they are? It doesnt change the fact that they are Chinese even if they deliberately pick up an English name.

They have a right to use any name that they want to. That is what this country is all about. FREEDOM. Maybe some people think your name is ridiculous. My name, Juanita is SPanish, and I am not Spanish or Mexican. Do you want to make something of it, too??

Sorry for my ignorance but I've never heard the term "Hongkies" before...but if your question is serious I think I may have an explanation: People want to fit into their environment. There's nothing self-demeaning about that. You dig?

Who cares? People can be whatever they want to. Who are you to say they can or cannot be this way or that way--the way YOU want them to be? Get real, and let people be people.
