A common thread to theist theories is that God(s) have an important hand in creating us. So if we could create something that, like us, could act and perpetuate itself without our further intervention, would we be considered to have god-like status?

Ya may be. But don't you think that have already been done by god thousands and thousands year ago. look at you don't you think you are not an advance machine who is ultimately controlled by god or gods,

look at climate and natural calamities can a atheist prevent it.Look at sudden death of any healthy person can any atheist understand it and look at the disability of any being even unable to move a simple organ of his body can a atheist explain to others.and look at nations and races suffering for generations can an non believer solve it. doesn't that prove god reward and punishes us as we perform. and back to your question if you develop a robot who can independent enough to perform what he thinks and you being the god to set rules i believe it will be more or less same ultimately what we robots have learned so far.

I believe humans should work as their own gods, and though I'm not Christian I will use a Christian argument to back this up.

Man is made in God's image and likeness; thus man must be at least God-like. Jesus claimed that humans would one day create greater miracles than he, thus human kind is given the potential to be shown as godly. The Lord's Prayer states "Our Father" in the first line; thus claiming that we have the same relationship to God as the person whom created the prayer, being Jesus; thus we are indeed gods.

We, as human beings, are already gods; to create self perpetuating AI we would simply be reaching some to some extent our godlike potential.

No man would not be a god. But man will be a creation of God who can recreate but does not assume the position of God.

No. WHat if the computer turned around and killed its creator? Would its creator still be a God?
If Bill Gates creates A.I then should we worship him?

If you can look at George Bush and think man is a "God", then you have some serious mental problems.

Machines are not known for being appreciative, of course, they don't complain about working long hours for no pay. No we would not be considered by machines, until they realized that we are a waste of resources.

And like Uranus, Kronos will emasculate his parental designer.
It's a double-edged divinity.

Any parent does what you describe, btw.

such artificial intelligence allready exists, but the question that comes to play now is that of a soul, does it have a soul, and if so, then does that make men gods?
