I saw a necklace that was inexpensive but it is gold plated

Gold-plated jewelry does not fade. Instead, the very thin layer of gold that is plated over another metal wears off, exposing the underlying metal.

The amount of time it takes the gold plate to wear off is dependent on a couple of factors. First, the thickness of the plating will effect the length of time the layer of gold plate will take to begin wearing off noticeably exposing the underlying metal.

Secondly, the type of jewelry and how it is worn will effect the length of time before the gold plate begins to wear off and expose the silver. For example, in general a gold-plated ring will wear off its plating much more quickly than a pendant that is plated. A piece of jewelry always worn next to the skin will wear off sooner than one worn over clothing.

Obviously, certain pieces of jewelry simply take more punishment and are exposed to more chemicals from the wearer's body and more agents from the environment that will cause the plating to erode than other pieces of jewelry are.

I often replate pieces of jewelry for people who have sentimental attachments to certain pieces. I think that in most cases, if someone were to wear a piece of jewelry on a daily basis, it would be highly unlikely that the plating would last even six months before a replating would be needed.

If you love the necklace, buy it and then have it replated by a jeweler as needed. The replating process is simple and inexpensive.

I'm afraid so, especially if your like me and rarely take your jewelry off. Gold plated will fade and eventually show the material underneath

Yes it will fade and so will white gold jewelry. It will take about 6 months to a year of everyday wear though.

It really depends of if it is full gold or not, the bigger % of it that is made out of gold the less amount it may fade.

it doesn't fade, the gold plate wears off. The thinner the gold plate the faster it will happen.
