Looking for the best resolution for a simple website desgin. I used to do it in 800x600 or something like that, but what would you suggest?

As a website designer, I design to fit all resolutions, however .. most will usually omit 800x600 as obsolete at this point. The standard rule is to ensure it suits 1024 and up.

i prefer to design at 800 x 600

and center aligned table....

and a light shaded background...

so even if u try to view it on other resolution it will be in center ... of the screen and there will be no problem in content alignment..

only old folks and children design for a specific size... make sure it looks great at any res! CSS is the tool!
