I prefer Avast or AVG free edition. I use both and find them both excellent. In 4 years since I went with the free version, and got away from MacAfee and Norton I have not had a virus on any of my 13 computers.

AVG= use less resource than AVAST but detection is not as high as the other scanner.
AVAST= resource hogs, slow down your pc too much. Better detection than AVG.
AVIRA ANTIVIR= best one. High detection rate and don't use lot of resources on your pc.

All 3 are FREE antivirus apps.

I personally like the one from Grifsoft (AVGfree) download and also the one for adware. Make sure you try it. I use that and deleted the virus scanner that came with my computer. It will also update automatically.

sure some will claim avg or avast is best which they are free versions and many use it.
but there protection isn't that great and the removal is far less.
i would get either norton,mcafee, or bitdender
