Hi, I am an auto technician. I wanted to give some quick advice regarding your check engine light. The other two answers are correct, you should get the car in to get it looked at. The computer is obviously seeing a repeating failure, since the light has been on for so long. The most important reason for finding the cause, is that once a code has been set, the computer will stop testing certain other components, until the problem has been corrected. For example, if your computer sees a malfunction with one of your oxygen sensors, it will not be able to trust that sensor's output. Your computer uses that data to test the operation and efficiency of your catalytic converter. So it will suspend testing your converter until your sensor problem is repaired, and the code is cleared. The longer that you wait, the more possible it becomes that when the converter is tested, it could be inefficient, and your check engine light will return. Your computer is programmed to compensate for certain problems to avoid running poorly. This is an attempt to reduce emissions. But, depending on the problems, it could cause a decrease in fuel economy as a side effect. Your best bet is to find a reputable repair shop that specializes in diagnostics and driveability. They will diagnose your car properly, and take the time to explain your options. Good luck.

Take it to a qualified mechanic and get it fixed. You can reset the computer by disconnecting the negative battery cable and leaving it disconnected for 5 minutes. However, until the problem is fixed, the light will just come back on.

You've got an old car, old cars play up. It's probly just a switch or a wire has disconnected it self. You should get this problem fixed however, because something might go wrong in the computer and you wouldn't know until it eventually breaks down.
