You will want to make sure you have all the sound drivers installed on your computer. To do this, visit your computer's manufactures website and download the latest drivers for your computer. While there you can also see if there are any other drivers you may need, (i.e. video, network, etc.). Good Luck.

Before formatting it is generally a good idea to make sure you are aware of the names of the devices in your computer

IE Sound Card, Video Card, Network Card, etc

Since you likely don't know the name by heart you have to do some detective work. If you bought your sound card separately it should have came with an install cd and you can use that. If the sound card you were using was the same one as you got with your computer you might have to open the case of your computer and see if you can find the name of your sound card on the actual card.

Open up your case, and find a sticker or something that says something relevant (your sound card is located where the sound jacks for your speakers plug in)
