Is the new MacBook (not Pro) w/ Core 2 Duo and OS X Tiger a true 64-bit system? The CPU is, and Tiger supposedly supports 64-bit, but I guess the real question should be, does a CPU and OS make 64-bit?

Yes. Here is an example: http://www.apple.com/imac/

The best benefit comes when your favorite applications are 64-bit also.

Yes it is since it is based on the Intel Core 2 duo. It may be unlikely though that it will be able to run Vista natively in 64 bit as the mac book can only run xp right now.

most programs are written in 32bit instructions, which is executed by the 64bit processors which has instructions on both.

the OS can be 64bit, the CPU can be 64bit but the programs that you are using are probably not.

programs will probably take some time to be converted to 64bit instructions. i'm guessing within the next 5 years, we'll see a lot of softwares being released as 32bit or 64bit.

As consistently, you pay for what you get. for about $1500 you will get a similar Mac or computer. even if you will get a $500 computer that works nicely, it purely isn't truly the same element as an intense priced computer. A MacBook Air or an ultrabook is perhaps perfect for school. lots of universities opt for to paintings with Macs although. Play with them both, come to a decision that you want. it is the purely thanks to make certain.

Yes to 64-bit question. However, most applications are not yet 64- bit. That's o.k. they will still run faster on a core2duo.

yes as long as the cpu is 64bit compatible, then you can put a 64bit operating system on there to get it.
