There is a terrific detective stories writer known all over Europe. Her name is Alexandra.Marinina. This writer is even called the "second Agatha Christie." She is an ex-homicide detective from a very tough country: Russia. I do not know if there are any good translations of her books available in the United States since I read her books in original language. But if there are good translations available, Alexandra Marinina's books will keep you at the edge of your seat.

Janet Evanovich has written a great series of "Stephanie Plum" mystery books. They are light mystery, funny, and very popular.
For the serious mystery reader, there are: Patricia Cornwell, Ruth Rendall, P.D. James, Anne Perry, and Agatha Christie to name just a few.

Try Patricia Cornwell books on Kay Scarpetta or a few other of her books. The Kay Scarpetta series is about a doctor involved with the FBI unit. Patricia's other books are about female detectives. Just go to her website and take a look...

The "Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter" books by Laurell K. Hamilton are like "What if Kinsey Milhone hunted supernatural criminals?" The first six or so books were very good.
