Sounds like you have defrag set up in task scheduler to run at a certain time. Do you? You stopped it, it won't start until you hit resume.

You should check your scheduler to see what is scheduled and when.

Some programs are best run when the computor is idle. Defrag being one of them. Defrag is putting all the files in order, ie outlook express files together. If you ,the user, are adding/removing files when defrag is running, the progam will keep starting over.

You either have a program installed that periodically defrags your hard drive, cleans up your hard drive to make it run at peak efficiency, faster, happier computer. De-fragmenting a hard drive is like house cleaning your hard drive, putting everything where it belows so Windows can find it quicker. Much like cleaning your house or room. Or in Windows it is scheduled to defragment. In any case, hitting stop will not hurt, though you should let it run the next time to tune up the computer, you will benefit. Annoyingly while the computer is defraging, it can slow down what your doing. If this happens, just take a break, do something else. Bottom line, everything is fine.

Probably, your C: drive NEEDS defragmenting. Defragmentation brings all the fragmented files together and pushes the free space to one corner. You needn't know in detail about it, but remember that you must defagment your hard drives(especially C:), once every month. It speeds up your computer(though there is a good chance you won't notice the improvement). In order to defragment, go to Start>All Programs> Accessories>System tools> Defragment.
It takes a lot of time(usually over 45 mins), so don't be impatient.

not sure what caused it to do so automatically
you can stop a defrag in the middle, although it's not recommended. i would defrag once every two months to keep your computer in top shape.

defragmenting the hard drive does exactly that. de-fragments the hard drive. it takes fragments of data and puts them together one after another. it's not designed to get rid of bad files. that's what chkdsk does.

The simple answer is that Defragmentation is a process that windows does every now and then to make your data more quickly accessible.

Most likely, you have the defragmenter scheduled to run at a certain time once a week or something. Nothing will happen to you for stopping it, but it is good to let your computer do it now and then. It will speed up the access time on your hard drive.

Its ok to stop, but defragmenting is a good idea to run it every few months or so. If you are on Win XP, to restart, go to control panel, click 'performance and maintanance' then 'rearrange items on your hard disk.....'
