Kitty, I bit my nails for 30 years and they were a horrible mess. I haven't chewed them for 3 years and have nice hands now. Some suggestions: (1) the foul-tasting liquid stuff is good in that it reminds you what you're doing (if you're like me, you don't even realise your fingers are in your mouth); (2) have a good think about what drives your nail biting (I had to do this, and realised it related to a weird competitve thing with my mum - weird but true, and it helped a lot to realise this); (3) like any nasty habit, take it one day at a time, reminding yourself at the end of each day that you're making progress, and (4) take pride in every tiny bit of nail growth and when they're remotely decent get a professional manicure - taking pride in your achievements is really important. Good luck Kitty - I know this is harder than most people realise.

you can try covering them with clear nail polish, you might just pick at that instead of your nails. Or (and this worked on my roommate) get some apple bitter from anyone you know who has horses or a from a feed store. Its harmless stuff that tastes really really bad. Put a little of it on your nails each morning and youll stop biting your nails in no time.

There's a nail polish you can get at beauty supply stores that tastes really bad even after it dries, i used it and stopped biting immediately, it tastes SO bitter. Try it i can almost guarantee your finger won't be anywhere near your mouth for a while.

There used to be a liquid you could paint your nails with that tastes bad. That could help remind you not to chew them. I know it used to be sold in pharmacies.

I used to have that problem. I occupied my hands with something else to do like holding a pen or another small object. You could always dip your fingernails in lemon juice if nothing else works.
