an avocation is something you do aside from your regular occupation, such as a hobby. Your primary occupation is a vocation. So the Doctors vocation may be medicine but his avocation could be horse-back riding, for example.
Edit: Lee is right, avocation could also be your vocation, albeit would be a less clear term to use for vocation, since the latter is so deeply ingrained and avocation is rarely used (have you ever heard it in a conversation?)
