Yes it is necessary to include page numbers in your table of contents.

An easy way to do this is to use the default headings in Microsoft Word (Heading 3, Heading 2, etc) during the course of your report.

Then, after you finish, go to the page where your table of content should exist. In the Insert Menu go to "Reference ->Index and Tables." From there, choose your styles for the table of contents. It will be automatically generated for you.

I have cited a longer description of the solution in my sources.

The answer is no, but if the page numbers are not included, then some other form of reference for the location of the material in the work is almost always used (ie. paragraph numbers).
If no other form of refernce is used, the table would be more accurately called a "list of included topics".

kind of defeats the purpose if you don't. The purpose of the table of contents is to let the reader know what is in the body of work and where in the body of work it can be found.
