I have a Compaq desktop computer that has an AMD Athlon 1.2 ghz processor. It is about a 2000 model. I know it's pre HP. I want to know if I can upgrade it to an Athlon 64. How would I know what pin I need? Can I pull the processor out without messing anything up to find what pin it is? Also I have 3 memory slots. If I installed 3 1 gig cards would this be a waste? I am kinda new to this but it seems pretty easy to do aside from the technical aspects. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Athlons are Socket A - Athlon 64s are Socket 939, so you can't install one in that computer. You could upgrade your RAM but you'll need to make sure your motherboard will support 1GB sticks in each slot. Head to the Crucial website and click Scan My System, this will tell you how much memory you can add and will give you some links on where to buy it.

You need alot more than that...

You are trying to jump from a technology 5 generations back to something that was made 2 years ago...

You will need to throw away everything, the motherboard, the RAM -- the PSU and ...well everything even the hard drive wouldnt work unless you reformatted it. youre asking about going from socket7 to 754 or 939 pin, even AM2 ??

and even if you could pull the RAM and put in 3 Gigs, WinXP doesnt like anything more than 2 Gigs, after that you start getting problems unless youre running XP64, which youre not.

It would be easier and cheaper to but a new one, or a used one on ebay

Why on earth would you want to upgrade to something that is already an outdated technology ??just to be behind again ??

Make a long story short -- no you cant do what you were trying, it might be easier to pull excalibur out of a kidney stone from Cleopatra

seriously what you want is impossible and funny

Your name fits....youre truly optimistic

you will see a huge distinction, yet no longer because of the 32/sixty 4 bit distinction. the version would be mostly because of the fact the ath64 is like 3 GENERATIONS extra stepped forward and with those advances, the helping technologies has stepped forward too. First, the Athalon XP replace into equipped back in 2001 and has distinctive clock velocity, bus velocity, cache length, training set, directx compatibility, etc besides as merely the bit potential. although, you assert if all different issues have been the comparable. they at the instant are not the two use distinctive motherboards. Athalon XP is socketA, amd64 makes use of one among numerous distinctive slots, none of this is like minded. people misunderstand sixty 4 bit technologies hardware and sixty 4 bit utility technologies. sixty 4 bit working structures mave extra handle area, yet little different benefit. so a techniques as a sixty 4 bit processor, a application ought to be written to hire the diffeent registers and cores. If utility (the interest or the utility) has no longer been written to apply the cores, the registers or further registers, that utility won't run speedier. the different guy is likewise incorrect approximately adressing ramm, 32 bit working structures can adress 2^32 bits (4GB). sixty 4 bit OS can handle sixteen TB (128 GB of actual memory) it could probable be extra interior your potential to purchase a clean laptop to than to change mobo, processor and ramm. your modern-day gadget is a lot reliable sufficient to do homework, browse cyberspace, etc on. yet i could get yet another gadget if i replace right into a extreme gamer. in case you are able to not handle to pay for to purchase a clean laptop, you are able to probable purchase a Athlon "Barton" sequence processor (2500+ to 3200+) and alter merely the proc with out having to purchase new mobo and ramm.

NO .. the only way to do this is to replace BOTH the motherboard and processor.. If you want to do that go to http://www.newegg.com and look for a motherboard together with a processor..

if you can, upgrade to an intel core 2 duo, it destroys all previous processors EVER made and will be worth it in the long run.
