they weren't slaves because slaves are property and the colonists weren't that. They were in dentured servants which they became out of pure will. This is how it goes. They want to come to america right? but they dont't have the money. so they put themselves on the market as an indentured servant and are bought by a rich person. they agree on a date in which the poor man must work until to be free. then the rich man pays for the poor an's fare to america.

many people signed up to be indentured servents for the colonists, mostly they were irish or english who had no money and most of them were women, however in later times, both africans and europeans captured or bought african natives to work in the fields and homes of wealthy colonists and early americans.

I believe you're talking about indentured servants who came to the new world, usually from England, and toiled as slaves for a specified period of time, usually seven years. I believe they had a choice given them of either indentured servitude or debtors prison.
