My daughter is 22 months and we just now put her in a toddler bed because she fell out of her crib and we don't want her to get hurt. my pediatrician said he recommended that a child stay in the crib until 3 years of age but if they can climb out they could fall and get hurt. Make sure the crib mattress is lowered as far as it can go and the rails are all the way up and if he can still get out its time for the toddler bed.
A good way Ive found to keep baby from wondering the house if they get up at night is to put the baby gate up in the door to their room! good luck!

When he starts climbing out of the crib its time to switch to a toddler bed. The crib should not topple over if it is a standard jenny lind type crib, unless he is rocking it back and forth really hard. Put the mattress on the lowest setting and when he starts trying to climb out you can either let him sleep in it with the rail down until you move him to a toddler bed or you can go ahead and make the switch. I put pillows on the floor beside the bed when I made the switch for my daughters.

We skipped the toddler bed, used the crib until 2 (with the tent, they can't get out if it's zipped closed) and then went straight to a big girl bed. We've done this with 2 of our 3 girls and our youngest will be 2 in a few months and we'll transition her the same way. We were worried about the climbing out of the crib and lowered the mattress as low as possible as well. We just made more of an effort to get the girls out of their cribs when we heard them in the mornings rather than letting them play (just to prevent them from climbing out etc.)
Good Luck!

I moved my kids out of the crib when they stood up in it, and tried to lean over the sides, or climb over. That was probably around 1 year old. The toddler beds are so nice and low to the ground, that there was much less danger of being hurt. I also just used a side rail on the toddler bed for them.

This actually depends on the child, if the child can climb up and down with ease, and does not appear to topple at any second, then the child would be able to sleep in a toddler bed. there are side rails that attach to prevent them from rolling out of the bed. So if your child can climb up on the couch and get down by himself easily than he is ready for a toddler bed. As I said this really depend son how developed and coordinated the child is.

I had my daughter start sleeping in her toddler bed when she was two. One good sign to look for is when they actually start climbing out of the crib..

As soon as they start trying to climb out on their own it's time to graduate. My son got adventerous at about 17 months so that's when we switched him. It depends on how active your child is, I can't imagine my son in a crib until the age of 3.

My youngest daughter was 14 months when I put her in a toddler bed. I had to move her ealier than the rest because she is my climber and i was worried about her safety. Turns out it was the best thing for her, she didn't bother trying to get out of bed after I switched her!
