It doesn't really DO anything to a computer. It's an operating system, just as Windows XP is an operating system and the Mac OS X is an operating system. Unix (in it's various states and derivitives) is the oldest, most refined and widely used operating system in the world.

It's an operating system created in the 60's. It provides a base for all other programs to run off of.
In that it's like Windows.
Linux (windows biggest competitor) is based on Unix.

Unix is an operating system type. Linux, FreeBSD (what I use), Solaris, AIX, and HP-UX are all Unix-like, or certified Unix. I wrote a little Linux/BSD tutorial on my website, which might clear things up for you:
