I went into teaching because I enjoy people and I have a talent for explaining things in a simple way. I led chemistry and biology study groups in college and realized that I taught better than the profs.

I have been teaching for 20 years and have enjoyed most of them. It is getting harder and harder to challenge the students. They don't want to understand how something works. They just want me to give them equations to memorize and that is it. It is difficult to teach problem solving skills.

The worst part of my job is trying to deal with parents who think they are experts in the field of chemistry and physics. They know the material, but they don't understand how difficult it is to teach this to a teenager who has raging hormones.

The hardest part of my job is covering the state standards among all the class periods missed due to standardized tests, class pictures, school play, field trips, etc. It just seems that the students are pulled from class for too many reasons.

If someone is interested in teaching I suggest that they spend a day observing a teacher in the same field. They need to see what is really going on in a class room so they are certain they want to work in those conditions.
