A silly question, I know, but would I be able to wrap a small box in gift wrap and still mail it and everything? Or would the post office reject it? I have seen some weird things mailed before (like a flip flop), but I'm still not clear on the gift wrap.

I know that it could be a hassle in case it has to be opened by the PO for some reason, but I'm just asking if it's "illegal" to wrap it and then mail it.

Wrapping paper will get torn to shreads in the delivery process, and the address will be lost. Wrap your present, then rewrap it in brown paper, preferably the heavy duty stuff they sell at the store for shipping, but a grocery sack brown paper will do.. Call the post office, or take your present and go,they will be happy to tell you what is legal and not, and can advize you on the costs for mailing, 1st class, 2nd class, to insure or not to insure. they sell mailing stuff, but you might be better off going to the discount department store, it might be cheaper[if money is a concern].
Be sure and use ink that will not run on the address label, gel pens can dissolve or blur. Ask about overnight shipping, and a box. You can also, for a price, be notified when the recipient gets the package.
My friend shipped me my present in a manilla envelope that already had padding in it, it too, was a small box.
Remember to also put the shipping and return address on the box itself, and inside the present. If the outside label is destoyed, the post office will start looking for them.
Hope this helps.

The problem with gift wrap (or any wrap on a package) is that the address is affixed to the wrapper and if the wrapper is ripped and torn off the box has no address. If you want to try it I think the PO will take it if you assure them that you put the address under the wrapper also.

I don't think it is illegal to wrap it. Time was when many packages were wrapped in plain brown paper - and xray is how they look inside most packages these days. You could call your local PO and ask them or check out www.usps.com for more info.

Peace!

I wouldn't suggest they do that. Plastic bubble wrap could get ripped easily, and the UK Post Office are well known for ruining parcels, even ones that are reasonably well packed. At VERY LEAST it needs to be thickly bubble wrapped with strong brown paper securely taped around the whole of the outside and lots of "Fragile" notices on it. But I would suggest that the seller could easily go to a stationary shop (like Staples) and buy a roll of corrugated cardboard which would be a lot more secure. Alternatively, maybe they should be using a courier service like Parcelforce, who are more experienced at handling large and awkward shaped items, and they tend to be more careful.

Its a bad idea. I don't know about postal service but I do know from working for a large courier company that they wouldn't even take parcels wrapped in brown paper. The paper gets ripped on on the conveyer belts. Put your wrapped box inside another box and mail it that way.

you can wrap a present in gift wrap, as long as you cover that with brown paper. However, if you are taking gifts on a plane, don't wrap them because you will just have to open them.

Wrap it in Christmas paper then with the plain brown wrapping and tape so the address will show up clearly.

you would have to wrap it a second time in plain brown paper ... or put it in another box and send it that way.

If it's over a pound than it's going to go priority regardless .. so the best thing to do is put your gift wrapped box inside the FREE priority mail boxes that the USPS provides and mail. Cheapest way.
