This would definitely depend upon many factors. The law in each state views a child's right to choose differently. However, a child is able to think clearly and build relationships with people by the age of 10. By age 12, children are becoming more coherent about what they want and what they don't want. Often if parents are splitting up, they can clearly tell you that they would prefer that parents stay together. They are NOT ready to make the decision. At 14, young teens are finding out who they are....they are feeling out EVERYBODY, including their parents. AT 15, they know. They can make a decision.
I don't think that they can feasibly do it before then without ripping their hearts out. Teens fall apart as well and need counseling to deal with all the changes that occur in a broken home, however, they are better capable to make the decision.
If you are talking about an adult child and living with other people such as college students rooming together, living in apartments, I believe that College students should know each other well for at least a year and a half before making such a decision to live with someone. They just have to know who they are looking to share their time, space and lives with.
Good luck!

actually, the child will never be able to chose where they live. My lawyer explained this to me when I went through a custody case. The judge will always listen to the child's opinion, regardless of age. However the judge will make the final decision.
When a child is involved in a custody dispute, they are assigned a Law Guardian, which is a lawyer to represent the child. The Law Guardian will meet with your child and ask questions. Your child's wishes will come out during that meeting. The law guardian will convey this to the judge.

THIS is a sad question!!! First of all, DON"T make a child CHOOSE!!! A mom and dad are both needed by a child, and the child already has enough suffering besides putting a guilt trip on him/her for choosing one parent over the other. If one of you is truly an ABUSIVE parent, then the child doesn't need that. If that's not an issue, then the mom and dad need to work it out and let the child stay with the parent who you both KNOW would be better for him/her, and the child can visit the other parent on weekends. Come on, this is YOUR DIVORCE, not your child's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It really depends of what state and county that you live in,but in Ohio the Age is 11 years old.It can be an earlier age if there is just cause of why the child is persistent to want to leave one parent to be with the other, but trying to just remove the child from one parent for no reason is very hard to do without just cause.I hope this has shed some light on your question and best of luck to you and your child and all that may be involved!

It depends on the state in which you live. In Texas the youngest age allowed to choose which parent to live with is 12 years old. However, the judge is allowed to let younger children decide in special cases.

This can only be answered by someone who knows your situation. We are all different people,we accept responsibility at different times of life. If the people around you feel you are ready to make good decisions for your life, they will allow you to. If not, they'll let you know your not ready. That's what parents and adults are in your life to do.

Johnny Bravo, love that name. It depends on several factors. What age she is, how mature she is in regards to explaining her feelings, state laws on this subject, etc. I would guess around 8 or 9 years of age. But my state would be different than yours. You can call children services in your town and they can tell you what the age is.
