Do wild rabbits (cottontails) feel cold in the winter? How low of a temperature is normal for them? Does the snow bother them?
Thanks!

They will find a tuft of grass or any kind of cover and make like a little nest and stay out sight in the day time . Cold doesnt seem to bother them to much .Snow is much harder on them if it gets to deep they cant run fast in it and are vulnerable to predators and dogs .Snow also makes it difficult for them to find food on the ground that is covered up .They will eat the bark off of bushes and small trees when its hard to get other food .This makes them have to forage more and puts them at greater risk of being eaten .

We have a neighborhood rabbit named Hideo and he has been around for 6 years. I don't see him as much in the winter but he is around in the morning some. His peak time is summer nights, and he parties all night long! We just get a few snows a year but it gets into the minus degrees sometimes.

They tend to hide and sleep out (not hibernate, just a deep sleep) when the temps drop below zero for a while, but otherwise they just tough it out.

You can sometimes watch them huddle up in a corner out of the wind. They fluff themselves up and try to stay out of the wind. They know that settling in the snow is usually warmer than staying out in colder wind (snow is almost always 32 degrees, while air temps might be a lot colder.
