First, I dont understand what you mean that 'your place wont let you have DSL" ... how would they know? DSL is through the phone lines ... if you have a home phone, you can have DSL and there is NO WAY that your landlord will even know.
Related to free service for laptops ... I'm not aware that there is such a thing. Some cities are starting to provide internet to its residents but I dont know of anything that is free. I think you are just referring to the wireless conection that laptops use. Invest in a wireless card for you pc but you will need the service as well and you will have to pay for that through the cable company.
P.S. ... if your friend has 'free' internet service then he is connecting via wireless to a nearby neighbor's internet service that is unsecured (or a nearby business who offers free internet ... ie Starbucks or a hotel). This is risky for both your friend and the person that he is connecting to.
P.S.S.... You have to have a wireless card ... which will include a wireless connection tool. You click on the tool and click on 'search for wireless connections' . it will find the wireless connections in your area . click on one of them that is unsecurred and click 'connect' ..thats it .. keep in mind, I don't recommend your plan here ... when you are connecting to someone else's router they can easily gain access to your pc and hack you...as well as view what is on your pc and etc. NOT a good plan.

Wow, you dont know anything about computers do you. Anyways, tthe hub would be of use if you had more then one computer communication with each other, which ou dont cuz your using a Win XP Ser Pak2 ::laughs::(thats the operating system and the service pack installed, 2 is the lastest). If you dont want to pay for internet you could just get a laptop, with a PCMCIA expansion slot, and put in the wireless receiver from there. Also your going to need a program that can find these access points like netstumbler. Your "place" may not "let" you have it beacuse the complex you live at, in, around, may not be equippied to deal with dsl/cable internet. And you may find it hard to find "free access points" as most are gaurded somehow, from intruders like yourself. So netstumbler should help you there. Or go to www.wikihow.com and search for war driving. Since that is what youll have to do. Or move to a differnt spot

Hey I'm sorry to say but t\laptops don't get free Internet. You could try a wireless network card that just replaces a dial up card in the back of your desk top but that would only work if one of your neighbors had a wireless network and it was OK with them if you used it. Verizon and sprint have wireless cards that use cell phone air waves but they only work with laptops. If nothing else you could get Satellite intern at from Dish or Direct TV. They work anywhere and with any computer a plus they run as fast or faster than cable but i do not know how much they cost.
if you find a free way to connect to the Internet please tell be because it has been burning a hole in my wallet for the past three years. Hope this helped.

The reason your friends get online for "free" is probably because someone in their area has an unsecured wireless router and they are using that to get online. If the router were to be secured, they wouldn't be able to get online. This is something of a grey area, for the most part they are stealing internet access.

First of all, if there is no hot spots with strong connection around your area then you aint getting nothing. You need to have either the hot spot or the internet yourself in order to make your desktop wireless to work. Yeah you could get a wireless netcard or even a usb wireless adapter, but it wont be of any use if there is no internet connection to grab.

DSL works off your phone line just like dial-up, its just has a different modem... I don't see what the problem is?
If its a particular company that doesn't cover your area, then look for another company

Hi. You COULD try a wireless card but that does NOT guarantee a connection. There are Hot Spots all over the place though and you should be able to connect there.
