On Verizon you get less minutes, but you get a better service area and much better customer service. If you just want a lot of minutes for cheap and half-assed support, Cingular would work for you.

Verizon and T-Mobile top the J.D. Power survey in customer satisfaction in most regions where they are available. Cingular rates as average or below industry average.

Between the two, I pick Verizon. However, being in the cell phone industry for a while, you learn that certain features that may be exclusive to a certain carrier may be enough for some cell phone users to go with that provider.
I would use a tool I created to compare all cell phone providers using what is most important to you. Check out www.cellufinder.com. It will take what is important to you and compare all cell phone plans from all carriers. It takes a lot of the guessing work out of it.
CelluFinder also finds the least inexpensive phones for your preferred carrier. I also do personal consultation, so feel free to email me as well.

Verizon all the way! Customer service is a breeze! I tried other providers none comes close to Verizon. If Verizon does oil and water utilities, I'd get them!
