have a carrier furnance. i keep unpluggin unit and holding down reset switches on burner, then plug back in.

Look in the yellow pages for a Carrier dealer. You may have a defective burner or starter that has been recalled and is unsafe in its present condition. Do NOT take any chances....

I would bet it's the thermocouple that's your problem. The thermocouple detects the heat from the pilot light to make sure it's lit before opening the main gas valve to the burners. Fairly cheap to buy and replace.
