I also love reading. I think people don't originally start to hate reading. People may not understand a subject or not be good in school. Then they won't want to read about the subject. Therefore, they hate reading. For example, I love reading, but I don't think I love reading everything. I dislike reading my sociology book because I find it very difficult to understand. I absolutely LOVE the subject and the lectures in class though. They are fascinating, but when I go home to read the book, I'm lost. Thus, I dislike reading sociology.
I think I like reading because it allows you to not only learn, but it also allows you to hold a conversation with ANYONE about ANYTHING. If you read a little big of everything, you won't feel uncomfortable in any situation because you'll always find something to talk about. Also, everyone will want to listen to your intelligent opinions or research. It's also very relaxing and I love imagining myself as the protagonist. It makes me feel smart.
Reading is the only way to succeed. Have you ever met a successful person that hates reading? You must learn to love to read at an early age or else it might be too late. So, for all you parents out there, bring your kids to the library! It's free!! What's better than that?

I'm with you - I LOVE to read, too. I've worked with many kids that didn't enjoy it so much. Mostly, I think it's frustration. My son has a lot of difficulty - maybe it's the fact that it takes so long to learn, while today's video games, even if you can't read the directions, you can usually figure out through trial and error. Perhaps, too, many kids stay away from it because someone is telling them WHAT to read.
I hope they are exposed to more and more - they'll find an author and/or subject that fascinates them.
Another thing about those that might profess to hate reading - maybe they think it's a waste of time (recreational) or they don't get "involved" with a story, so they lose interest.

I love to read. When I was a little kid I always got in trouble for reading when I was supposed to be doing chores or sleeping. Reading for me is an escape from my day to day life. Through a book I can do things that I would never be able to do in real life. My favorite quote, "We read to know we're not alone." That is why I read.
I also have never been able to understand why people don't like to read. I kind of think that most people's parents just never got them interested in reading or they had a hard time reading when they were younger and so never got into reading for pleasure.

I love reading as well, but I have a very close friend, who avoids it. I think it may be because it feels too acedemic to her. Like shes back in school with an assignment. I think a lot of people feel this way because it takes a lot of time. We're a fast paced society. Fast food, make money quick; we want everything now. But books don't work that way. And with busy schedules, kids, multiple jobs, reading is rather hard nowadays.

I personally like reading because it's interesting and it gives me ideas, as well as being a form of escapism. It also increases my vocabulary and improves my writing, though I don't think actively about that part.
But I can understand why people don't like reading. Some aren't good at it; others have dyslexia or other disabilities. Others have yet to find a genre, author, or story that interests them. Some have been forced to read stuff they didn't like (for school, for example) for so long that they stopped liking it.
Hope that helps.
God bless.

Reading is my fave past-time. I have my kids into reading too. We used to spend hours at the library picking out books. You learn new words, cultures, all sorts of things by reading. I love getting lost in a good book!

I adore reading - the stories generally give you so much more detail into the characters and the motives as opposed to movies. But I'll be straight-up and say that sometimes I just need a quick entertainment fix that a book can't deliver, and I'll shove in a DVD!! But if it's depth and quality I'm after then I'll stick to my books thankyou very much!

I love reading! I will read just about anything. I guess some folks have to learn to like it from the time they are small, with good support from their parents or else they may grow an aversion to it.

I LOVE reading. It's like being sucked into an alternate reality ( i tend to be a big fantasy, adventure, and horror reader). I will sit down and finish a book in one sittting. I used to tutor 4th graders and I got most of them into reading.
