I'm interested in gettting my first and my middle name changed? What department would I go to to get that done? Would I have to return to the place that I was born?

I just went to my courthouse, signed some papers, went before a
judge to swear I wasn't a fugitive and a couple other questions,
the judge signs and stamps a legal document, you get. You go to
social security, to get their copies. You'll get a new one with your
new name on it in the mail ( around 2 weeks). It cost me about
75 $. Really cheap. You don't need a lawyer for that. Go to your
couthouse and ask what to do.

You will have to file an affidavit indicating your present name and proposed change showing reason for change. After that an application has to be filed before a magistrate/judge who shall notify for objection, if any.He shall allow there after provided proposed move is not intended for escaping civil/criminal liabilities. You need not go to your place of birth for this. But you will require a lawyer for doing this for a small fees.

Hire an attorney, and the fee should not be that much, and it has to be presented in front of a judge and the judge has to grant it. Most likely the main thing the judge is going to ask, is if your changing your name to avoid certain debts, or so you cannot be located for financial or legal reasons.
