Check .mac (mac.com) and make an appointment with the Genius Bar in your area. Hopefully someone can help you out with this.
I think there might be a way to get them back, but very likely? No.
Next time, make sure to burn your photos and documents regularly onto CD or DVD because your Hard Drive can take a nose dive at any time and this will happen all over again.
I'm very sorry; I lost a few novel edits doing that. Luckily, I had backed up the originals to a thumb drive the week before and was able to salvage what I needed while sobbing in relief.

Unfortunately, there is no way of restoring deleted files on Macs because when you empty the trash bin, it actually removes it from the hard drive. This can be a good feature sometimes, but in this case, definitely not. There is nothing that can be done about the loss of those files. There is no software that can help you either.

They may be in your Recycle bin. Open it up and if it is there just restore back to folder it was in. Or...
You could try the System Restore which takes you back to a time when your computer was working good. Go To:
start
programs
accessories
systems tools
system restore
This process is completely reversable. And does not remove your personal files. Just go back one checkpoint at a time until your puter is working good again.
You may need to reinstall any recent software programs, but it is a quick fix when you dont know what else to do.
