At what age did you introduce a food other than milk or formula to your baby?

What was it?

My baby's almost 4 months old. She weighs 16 pounds now. (8 pounds at birth) Smiles, laughs, squeals, coughs because she knows it causes attention to her, pretty sure she said "Hi" today, coos, reaches for things, holds onto things, can support her own weight, looks around for people who WERE there but disappeared, sleeps pretty well at nights. She's been strickly on milk. Tried the cereal-in-the-milk thing out a couple months back, but with no success. Any tips or input?

You should first try to do the cereal with milk again. There are different flavors available now, and there may be one that your baby would like. A baby has to develop the taste buds and also have the time to learn the mechanisms to follow when a new food is introduced to them.
The first ones to try would be rice and oatmeal cereals. Not both at the same time. Try one for about two weeks and then try the other. This is to make sure that the baby is not allergic to anything. There are also rices and oatmeals with apples and bananas available. But try the plain ones first.
If you baby likes those then, you should slowly start to introduce baby foods. Only do one at a time for two or three week intervals. Again, this is just to make sure that he baby is not allergic to anything.
You will know the baby is ready for baby food, when you try to feed her with a spoon and she keeps most of it in her mouth on her own. without you using the spoon to keep it in her mouth.

P.S. One more thing, if you plan on starting baby food, start with the vegetables. Add fruits and sweets last.

I would try the cereal in milk thing again. Ad small amounts at first and gradually increase the mix over time. The hardest part is getting the nipple holes the right size. Cereal will clog a small whole very quickly, & your baby well not be able to get much of anything out of the bottle. You'll likely need to increase the size of the hole gradually as you increase the cereal mix. Be careful not to make it too big as too much could come out too fast causing possibly choking (not to mention a mess). Pay attention & use some common sense & all will be well. =o)

I started my twins on rice cereal at 4 months. Just make sure it's plain rice, oatmeal, or barley. Be sure to keep feeding her the same kind of cereal for 3-5 days to make sure she doesn't have an allergic reaction. And remember you can alternate those 3 to give her an early shot at variety! About 5 months I started to mix different fruits and veggies into the cereal, always waiting 3-5 days between to test for allergies.

She's already doubled her birth weight, so she sounds totally healthy! Good luck :)

My daughter just turned five months, but she weighed 16 pounds at her four month checkup. Anyway our pediatrician told me to hold off on solids until she was 6 months, But she was not satisifed with just formula or even when I put rice cereal in her bottle. So a week ago I started giving her rice cereal with apples. And just plain applesauce. She loves it and now she can go longer between bottles. She seems much more satisfied. I really believe your baby will tell you when they are ready for more than formula. But be sure to only introduce one food at a time and stick with it for a week before trying other foods. Well Good Luck

Usually the pediatrician will tell you to start the baby on rice cereal at about 6 months. Feed that once a day for a week or two, then begin to introduce vegetables. Begin with orange ones, then green ones. You don'twant to start with fruit first because they're sweet, and eating veggies after fruit is like, Blah.
When you do start her on cereal, don't put it in her bottle. Mix it and feed her with a spoon.
But, as with all people who ask for medical information, I can't enforce this enough - ask the baby's doctor about how and when to start what.

Wait until she is at least 6 months old. Doctors recommend that because children given food earlier than 6 months are likelier to develop food allergies. A lot of people will tell you to feed your baby early because doctors used to tell people to give their baby cereal to help them sleep through the night.

Very weak watery juice from 8 weeks and 3 mths for cereal, if she refused it it may have been to thick, then I progressed to stewed apple, yoghurt, vegies (steamed and mashed) a little at a time. Whilst milk is best, if she's content then there is no rush.

You can start rice cereal at 4 months. Then at six months start the veggies and fruit. 9 months is when you can add meat to her meals.
