right now hellsing is on tv, at least it is here.. and I'm curious. Was hellsing a real person like dracula modeled after that king or count drako (is that even right, going off of an old history channel docu and it's a little hazy), and then, wasn't the movie based off of a comic book or graphic novel or something? I remember when the movie first came out way back when, they wanted to call it just Hellsing, but couldn't because of the anime of the same name...

Dr. Van Helsing has always been a main character in the Dracula legend. He was the one who figured out why Mina was sick, etc. You can go back to the plays about Dracula or the early movies and still find him. The legend is a conglomeration of Count Vlad, and they needed a hero, so he was written that way.

in the original story "Dracula" by Bram stoker there was a character called Van Hellsing. He was (or so i think) a doctor who knew how to combat vampires.
