I would say either:
In presenting the data we have sought to create a balance between the amount of information presented so that is relevant and useful but does not bombard the reader with too much detail.
OR:
In presenting the data we have sought to create a balance between the amount of information presented so that is relevant and useful but does not distrct the reader with too much detail.

In presenting the data we have provided enough relevant and useful information without including too much detail.

I personally would cut it down like that. It's much too wordy. Anyway, if you like the wordiness, "overwhelm" in this case could be two things. First, that you're overwhelming the point, meaning that you're burying it in unnecessary details. It could also mean that you're overwhelming the listener, that you're confusing them with too many details.

So, you could replace it with "confuse the audience", "bury the point", or something of that sort. I don't think it's a bad word choice, I just think it's ironic that a sentence talking about not wanting to "overwhelm with too much detail" is so wordy.

overwhelm means too much or overflow. Over flow can be used in its place.
