Have you been running an antivirus program on a regular basis? Try downloading AVG Antivirus, Ad-Aware, Spy-bot Search and Destroy, and Windows Defender. All free. Update and run them in both normal windows and in "Safe Mode" (F8 before WinXP loads). Check your device manager and see if there are any yellow triangles with a ! inside of them. Those are your problem devices. Your mobo could be the problem here, the southbridge chip might be toast. I had a mobo that fried itself and it would not allow the video card to come out of a 4-bit mode. The video card was tested on another computer and was fine. The mobo was repaired and replaced and is working fine. When the computer shuts down it saves your settings, the settings that you have at that moment, whether they are messed up or not.

Yo man, if you have a computer from specific companies like Dell and HP and Lenovo, you better call them up and get a technician to help you with these type of problems, they usually have certain programs for lets say, your moniotor and graphic card. These computers were designed in such a way that when certain error or breakdown occurs, you will have to call their technician.
Unless your computer is DIY, its easier to get it fixed by yourself because all the installation CDs for your monitor etc would be with you.

if you did not "save" this information manually you have lost it. And if your restore disk does not work you are screwed.
